1 NEW YEAR'S DAY
As in many other parts of the world, New Years Day is a holiday. New Years Eve is also the time for fireworks.

Dec 29 - Jan 13 CHIANGMAI RED CROSS AND WINTER FAIR
The Fair is a popular agricultural show that attracts farmers from around the province to view the latest developments.This fair is the premier event for much of the province's agricultural population. This year's fair will be held in front of the Chiangmai Provincial Hall.
19 - 21 BORSANG UMBRELLA FESTIVAL
Both Borsang and nearby Sankamphaeng hold Handicraft Fairs and competitions. Borsang is the centre of the umbrella industry.
24 CHINESE NEW YEAR
29 January - February 4 WOOD CARVING FAIR
The village of Baan Tawai in Hang Dong, south of Chiang Mai is the venue for this fair. Work by local woodacrvers is on display and there are dispalys.

1 - 7 CEREMONIAL VENERATION OF KING KAWILA'S STATUE
The Kawila Army Base is the venue for the ceremony to pay respect to the great military leader, King Kawila.
2 - 4 CHIANG MAI FLOWER FESTIVAL
A beautiful float procession takes place through the city - all bedecked with flowers. There are also cultural performances at Rama 9 Lanna Park.
2 - 4 ELEPHANT SATOKE FAIR
Elephant Conservation Centre, Lampang.
3 - 5 DTEEN JOK FESTIVAL
Mae Chem (southwest of Chiang Mai) hosts a festival of fabric weaving. Goods of a high quality are on display and there are inexpensive souvenirs for sale.
4 CHIANG MAI MARATHON
8 MAKHA BUCHA
This religious holiday commemorates the occasion of the Buddha's first sermon to 250 disciples. Visitors are more than welcome to join who carry lighted candles, joss sticks and small flower bouquets while walking three times around the chedi of a temple.

In honor of Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn's birthday on April 6th, the Tourism Authority of Thailand organizes an Arts and Culture Festival for the Chiang Mai.

Devotees light candles and make the 7km pilgrimage up the mountain to the temple.
7 VISAKA BUCHA
A religious festival, pilgrims celebrate the life of Buddha by walking to Doi Suthep to make merit on the night of the full moon.
Early May CITY MERIT-MAKING (THAMBOON MUANG)
This merit-making ceremony preserves Lanna culture and heritage with festivals at the four corners of the old city.
2nd weekend MANGO FAIR
This agricultural fair takes place in the Sunzai district of Chiangmai over the second weekend in May. Activities are: beauty contest, parade and cultural show.
Mid-May LYNCHEE FESTIVAL
Held in Fang, the festival takes place over the second and third weekends in May to celebrate one of Thailand's most delicious fruits.
19 - 25 CITY PILLAR INTHAKIN FESTIVAL
Held to bring peace and prosperity to the city, Buddha images are paraded through the streets. It is held over 7 days and nights.

This Buddhist holy day commemorates the Buddha's sermon to his first five disciples.
6 KHOW PAHNSA
The Thai period of Lent requires monks to stay in their monasteries for fear of harming living things should they leave. Admission to the monkhood is also common during this period.

This fair, to celebrate the longaan takes place in Lamphun to the south, at the Sport's Stadium.

12 HER MAJESTY'S BIRTHDAY
A Thai National Holiday. Government buildings are brightly lit to celebrate Her Majestiy's birthday and to celebrate Mothers' Day.
August LANNA ORCHID FESTIVAL
Annual horticultural festival features displays of orchids, flower arrangements and potted plants at the Buak Hart Park.

This annual fruit fair is held in the Uttaradit province on the second or third weekend of the month with parades and beauty contests.

2 POI LEM SIP-ED (OK PANSA)
Mae Hong Son. The celebration of the Buddhist Holy Day Awk Pahnsa and of the end of Lent and the rainy season. During the month there are parades and donations to monks.
2 DHEVO-ROHANA OFFERING CEREMONY
This celebration of the day Buddha's spirit descended from heaven and returned to earth. It is held on the first day of the waning moon in the 11th lunar month. Dried foods are presented to monks at the temple on the Chiang Mai University campus.

30 NORTHERN LANTERN FESTIVAL

Oct. 31 - 1 Nov. CHIANGMAI YEEPENG (LOY KRATHONG) FESTIVAL
An experience not to be missed. The festival dates back more than 700 years and is thought to pay homage to the water Goddess for her bounty. It takes plave over two night under the full moon. People light hot air balloons, set off fireworks and send small, decorated krathongs down the rivers. A very pretty sight. There are also beauty pageants and parades.
