Agrotourism
Agrotourism is becoming increasingly popular and attracts large numbers of overseas visitors in addition to local support. Most of such projects are either run by the government or by non-profit organizations. In addition to producing fresh produce of their own, operations such as the Royal Projects and the Department of Agricultural Sciences also perform research that results in new varieties.
Royal Project Inthanon Research Station Amphoe Chomthong, Chiang Mai
Situated approximately 90 minutes south of Chiang Mai at Doi Inthanon, this station is one of four that belong to the Royal Projects. The climate is such that temperate plants are grown and sold through the Project's marketing arm. The station is an interesting diversion for those visiting Doi Inthanon peak.
Maejo University Amphoe Sansai, Chiang Mai
The university prides itself on having the largest agricultural school in northern Thailand. A variety of visits may be arranged (053 878 038 ext 2506) such as half/full day tours of the department, its demonstration areas, the deer farm, arboretum and flower gardens run by local farmers. A longer two day tour includes birdwatching and a stay in a nearby village. Depending on the season, guests may also be encouraged to try their hand either at rice planting or harvesting.
