Good guesthouses in Chiang Mai have clean basic rooms. Some are more like small hotels offering air-conditioned rooms as well as a coffee shop area in pleasant surroundings.

The guest houses listed here are ideal for travellers who want just a reasonable base from which to explore. Most have bathrooms inside the rooms with hot water showers, a surprisingly useful facility in the cold season. Value for money is virtually guaranteed.

Taxis from the airport cost 80 baht to downtown locations. From the stations red minibuses should cost 10 baht per head. Touts and some minibus drivers waiting at the stations will try to take you to guest houses that pay them commission. Fix clear destinations and prices with drivers before getting into their vehicles.

Guest houses in central locations may be found off Thaphae Rd., as well as off Mun Muang Rd. lanes 2 and 9 . Other guest houses with riverside ambience are located on Charoenrat Rd.
