Princess Dararatsmi

The 7th Chao of Chiang Mai was Chao Inthawichayanon. In 1873, he was blessed with his eleventh daughter, known as Princess Dararatsmi. In 1885, she became a royal consort at the court of King Chulalongkorn (rama V). She gave birth to a daughter at the age of 26 but the child died at the age of three.

Whilst at the court, she actively promoted the ways of Northern Thailand and returned to Chiang Mai at the age of 57. She then promoted interest in and improvement of local agricultural practices and became patron of several enterprises, giving land to schools and endowments to temples and McCormick Hospital. She died in 1933.

Princess Dararatsmi was born in 1873, the eleventh daughter of Chao Inthawichayanon, the seventh chao of Chiang Mai. At the age of 12, she went to Bangkok with her father to pay tribute to King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) and later became a royal consort.
