Driving in Thailand
| Hiring a Vehicle |
|
For travel on dirt roads, a Suzuki Caribian is probably the most useful vehicle although four wheel drive is not necessary on most dirt roads. The vehicles have a high ground clearance which makes them desirable for dirt road travel. Note that these vehicles do not handle like sedans and care must be taken at corners.
For tar road travel a sedan (1,000Bt /day) is entirely sufficient. For jaunts around town, hire a small motorcycle (100Bt/day). There are plenty of outlets that hire these vehicles. Most guest houses and backpacker hostels also have mountain bikes to rent. Before renting any vehicle be absolutely clear as to what and what is not covered by the insurance even though 'comprehensive' insurance is offered.

| Public transport |
|
Though this guide recommends renting a vehicle, bus transport is available along the highways, and the minor routes are usually served by passenger pick-ups. These may be caught or by waiting at the side of the road you wish to go up.
