Transport within Chiang Mai
If you ever need to get to the Airport in a hurry, or you have a flight booked first thing in the morning, the Airport limousine, is a lifesaver. Book the day before by calling 270 222 Dial 9 for English then extension 2132.
You can book the day before or the same day for later flights. Cost is usually 100 baht, with a small surcharge for early morning pick ups.
The red minibuses ('songthaeo') defy description. Some keep to preferred routes and others go according to demand. Locals pay a flat fare of 8Bt for a short journey. If the driver has to go down a lane to a destination, the fare will be higher. Longer journeys are by negotiation.
Indications are for fares from downtown Thapae area, assuming the driver will pick up other passengers.
10-20Bt: Rail station, Chang Khlan, Airport Plaza, CM University, the zoo.
30Bt: Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep from CM University.
Half Day rental: 300 - 500Bt
Tuk-tuks operate like taxis and are more expensive. Expect to pay 40-50Bt for a journey from the middle of town to a destination near the ring road.
The pink buses run from the Khwan Wiang Estate to the airport and then round the old city. The bus stops at entrance to the airport. 9Bt A/C every 20 mins, 05.30 - 21.50.
