The Natal Battlefields
On the 4th of July 1879, Chelmsford with his refurbished and reinforced column of around 5,000 men engaged the Zulus near oNdini.
The British, with their Gatling machine guns cut down wide swathes of the Zulus who eventually fled. The cavalry were then sent out and finished off many hundreds more. The British lost 12 dead. The Zulus lost 1,500. Cetshwayo watched this final battle and then torched and deserted his kraal.
