Situated under Majuba, the town - 'the people rest' - was established at the end of the first Boer War. At Convention Bridge, negotiations between Paul Kruger and Sir Henry Loch were conducted in a railway carriage placed exactly astride the Transvaal/Natal border. There is a museum and picnic site near Amajuba.
A memorial to the 700 women and children who died in a local concentration camp is in the town centre. Also near the town is the grave of General Piet Joubert and Dirk Uys. Volksrust Prison is where Gandhi spent several months.
Each year there is a Mardi Gras where dozens of stalls selling arts and crafts are laid out.
