Winterton is a typical pioneer settlement with a relaxed and easy going atmosphere. Originally known as Springfield, the tree lined village was renamed Winterton in 1910, after the Secretary of Agriculture for Natal.
The village serves the large agricultural community who farm maize, wheat and beef and is the main access point for the Central Drakensberg resorts.

The small Winterton Museum, situated in Church St. is well worth a visit. The museum has displays of the geology, fauna and flora of the Drakensberg and exhibits on the history of the area, San paintings, a blacksmith's shop, early inhabitants and a reconstructed beehive kraal.
It also includes information on the Boer War battles of Spioenkop and Vaalkrans which occurred nearby. Also nearby is a vulture restaurant.
