Golden Gate National Park

Golden Gate National Park is located in the Free State around the Little Caledon River but is close to the northern Drakensberg and in fact is formed from part of the northern aspect of the Drakensberg.

It is easily reached by passing across the Drakensberg via the picturesque Oliviershoek Pass then left to QwaQwa. It is some 20kms past QwaQwa.

A steep valley runs through the centre of the park at the margins of which are magnificent sandstone formations that give the park its name. There are both short trails and a single long trail and a selection of wildlife including the largest herds of black wildebeest in South Africa.

Glen Reenen is the camp and also contains attractive chalets. Book through the National Parks Board. Near the camp is the Basotho Cultural Village where you can see Basotho traditions and handicrafts.
