The most dramatic and truly awe inspiring scenery in the Drakensberg is to be found in the Royal Natal National Park. The 'Royal' title is a result of a visit by the British Royal family in 1947.
The world famous 'Amphitheatre' occupies much of the escarpment in the park and was used as the backdrop for the film 'Zulu'. Bounded by the Eastern Buttress and the Sentinel, this 3000m high, 4km long precipiece provides a magnificent view both from below and above with the Tugela river leaping 700m over the top on its way to the Indian Ocean, the second highest falls in the world.
Five major rivers have their sources above the escarpment, some flowing to the Indian Ocean, others, including South Africa's longest, the Orange River, flowing westwards for more than 2000kms to the Atlantic Ocean. It was in this area in 1878 that the last group of San (Bushmen) were seen.
There are several interesting drives, at least one of which should be enjoyed during your stay. Amphitheatre, Injasuti, Oliviershoek, Retiefs Pass, Monks Cowl, Witsieshoek and Golden Gate Drive information can be obtained at Drakensberg Publicity.
