Although not strictly part of the Drakensberg tourist region, Spioenkop is close to Winterton and the Central Drakenserg. The original drift used by the British in the Second Boer War is now covered by the dam on the Tugela.
The dam is the centre of a KwaZulu Wildlife resort and boating, yachting, canoeing and fishing are available. There are more than 250 species of birds around the dam and a hide from which visitors can watch raptor feeding in the winter months. Mammals include: rhino, zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, springbok, impala, buffalo and eland. Controlled hunting in a portion of the reserve is allowed in season. There is a small Boer War museum.
There is a choice of self guided trails including the one to the summit of Spioenkop to see the famous Boer War battlefield from which there is a splendid view of the Drakensberg Mountains - for which attractions Spioenkop is very centrally located.
Twenty five fully equipped six bed chalets and a camp site. There is a rustic camp for 8 people 14km from the chalets.
