| The Natal Playhouse
The Playhouse is the province's premier theatre complex and is widely regarded as one of South Africa's most beautiful.
The resident Playhouse Company not only participates in current productions but also takes mobile theatre to schools and provides resources for community productions.
The complex was originally the Tudor style Playhouse and the adjacent Moorish style Colosseum but in 1986, after extensive renovations, the new complex was opened.
In addition to the more adult theatre offerings, the Theatre Cats put on shows for kids aged between 6 and 12 once a month over the weekends ( 369 4488).
On Saturday mornings, Steps into Dance holds ballet/dance classes for children of 9 years and up ( 369 9433).
The complex now hosts ballet, opera, return overlibma, comedy and just about any other type of performing art. Consult the local press for current productions. Guided tours are available (Tues. 10.00) that cover front of house, the history of the theatre and other aspects that are involved in bringing a production to the stage.
