Ghost Mountain

Near Mkuze is eTshaneni ('place of the small stone'), more popularly known as Ghost Mountain. The Ndwandwe tribe traditionally buried their chiefs high up in a secret cave on this imposing mountain. However, they were conquered by Shaka in 1819 and fled with their chief Shoshangane to Moçambique to form the Shanganes.

However, tradition still dictated that their chiefs be buried on the mountain and members still carried - in secret - their chiefs more than one thousand kilometres to eTshaneni to be buried.

The mountain has the reputation for ghostly occurrences and strange lights and eerie noises have been reported from its slopes.

Ghost Mountain is part of the Ubombo Range which extends for more than 600 kms northwards. Only it and the Drakensberg remain from a basalt layer that formed the shores of an ancient sea.
