Maputaland

Natal South Africa 2010The Reserve has been linked with neighbouring private game ranches to an extent of 31000ha. This size is capable of supporting elephant and rhino.

The setting of the reserve is very scenic with a backdrop of the Lebombo mountains and fishing for tiger fish on the dam is very popular. There are currently no permanent facilities.

The Jozini dam was constructed to aid the irrigation of the tropical fruits grown in the area. The dam wall is 89m high and 500m long.

Wildlife More than 200 species of birds have been recorded here. The Pongola ('trough') river is the major river of the region and supports a large population of crocodiles and hippos.

There are four camps - Sondaba, Mvubu, Inyati and Mhlozi, each with their own character.

Pongola

This small town takes its name from the Pongola River ('the river of many troughs'). The town is the centre of the old Ndwandwe kingdom. The Ndwandwe controlled the supply of beads and skins and other goods to and from Delagoa Bay (Maputo). The centre was called Magudu where the mother of King Zwide lived. She is said to have hung the skulls of her son's defeated enemies at the back of her hut. In order for Shaka to gain control of the trade routes and attain local hegemony, he had to defeat the Ndwandwe. The town is also on the Kingfisher Route.
