St. Lucia World Heritage Park, Maputaland

Because very deep water is close to shore, Sodwana Bay is famous for its fishing and fishermen regularly take record catches here. It has also become the largest open campsite in the Southern hemisphere and is the closest beach resort to Johannesburg.

It was originally considered as the site for a deep water port until Richards Bay was chosen.

Wildlife Other attractions are the marvellous underwater photography and snorkelling available on the reefs and the opportunity to watch leatherback turtles laying their eggs during the summer nights.

The area was once popular also with ivory hunters because it was close to areas rich in big game and contained the only fresh water for miles.

Accommodation Accommodation: ten five bed and ten eight bed fully equipped cabins and campsites with ablution facilities. There is a bait shop, provision store and private dive operators from whom training may be obtained.

Hiking Trail The Mgobozeleni Trail is a three hour trail that winds through the coastal bush to Lake Mgobozeleni.
