The KwaZulu Natal Midlands

Natal South Africa 2010 The town is named after Mueden in Germany, home of an early missionary. It is also the point furthest east that San paintings have been found. There is also an odd optical illusion at about 21kms from Weenen when a stationary car will run uphill!

Lilyfontein Hiking Trails (03346 777): two 2-day trails through the Thukela (Tugela) Biosphere Reserve. Safe parking and comfortable accommodation.

Mhlopeni Game Reserve (03346 722): Hutted accommodation, reasonable tariff, hunting in season. Bird watchers' paradise.

Esther Cheeses (0333 32714): Traditional and new varieties of Wensleydale cheese (such as garlic and walnut). Cheese lunches, demonstrations and talks about cheese.
