It was here that Shaka built his last capital called kwaDukuza - 'the place of the lost person' because of its size - and it was here that he was murdered by his half brother Dingane in 1828 and his body thrown into a grain pit.
The town of Stanger has now been renamed kwaDukuza and stands on the site of the Royal Kraal. There is a small memorial to Shaka in the town centre. Stanger is a cane growing centre and a bustling town.
The Stanger and North Coast Museum houses a great variety of historical items and information on King Shaka, the sugar industry and local history.
Directions to historical sites associated with King Shaka may be obtained at the museum.
