Tongaat is a small sugar town, famed for its sweet litchis, with streets lined with jacarandas and flamboyant trees. Several kilometers from the town is its beach - Westbrook Beach.
The casuarina trees found along the road in this area were planted by Mauritians who worked on the sugar plantations. The population of the town is mainly Indian but the town is also the headquarters of the biggest sugar company in South Africa. The local Indian temple holds one of the largest Kavady festivals in the province.
