Shaka Decimates his own People

The huge numbers of cattle booty required grazing. This led Shaka to turn his attention to the area South of the Tugela. His warriors attacked all the kraals in that area, killing more than a million people and scattering several million more starving refugees on to the veld.

All the kraals were burned, the stock looted and the crops destroyed. Cannibalism was not uncommon.

Many of these refugees wandered the area between the Orange and Vaal rivers. To make matters worse, a Zulu chief that had aroused the anger of Shaka migrated over the Drakensberg and settled in the western Transvaal.

The chief of these Matabele, Mzilikazi was as great a scourge in this area as Shaka and the Boers were soon about to encounter this man.

Shaka was assassinated by his brother Dingane in 1828. While not as warlike as Shaka, Dingane was sly and capable of just as much brutality. He was also to meet with the Boers in time.
