The reserve was protected by Zulu chiefs because of the variety of medicinal plants found there. It is a rare link between the tropical forests of Tanzania and Malawi and the temperate forests of Knysna.
The forest is well known as the most impressive stretch of indigenous forest in KwaZulu-Natal. The forest supports some magnificent butterflies. There are good views from the many granite outcrops that dot the reserve.
