Umlalazi Reserve

The Umlalazi Nature Reserve (900ha) contains one of the best stands of mangroves on the Zululand coast.  As with many mangrove stands, it is home to fiddler crabs, climbing whelks, mud skippers and small eels and fish.  More than 300 species of birds have been recorded and the rare palm nut vulture breeds in the reserve. 

There is a grove of the giant raffia palms. There are three walks that take visitors through differing coastal habitats.  The lagoon contains hippos, crocodiles and sharks (swim with care!). The word means ('the place of the whetstones'). Accommodation is in fully equipped 2 bedroomed log cabins or on caravan sites.
