Tourism and Accommodation in Natal

The Zulu chief Cetshwayo killed his half brother Mbuyazi and five other sons of the Zulu chief Mpande to become undisputed heir to the Zulu throne at Ndondakusuka near here on December 2nd 1856. It was, by far and away, the most vicious battle that ever took place in KwaZulu-Natal. More than 23,000 men, women and children were killed that day in hand to hand combat

To celebrate his victory, Cetshwayo built a stronghold called 'The swallower of the elephant' or Gingindlovu (or 'gin gin I love you' to the British soldiers). The British force sent to relieve Eshowe fought with the Zulu army near here in one of the main battles of the Zulu campaign on 2nd April 1879.

The Zulus were defeated with the loss of 1000 men. THe British lost 13.
