The final battle of the Anglo/Zulu War of 1879 was fought at Ulundi ('the high place') on 4th July. The British then burned the settlement down. Ulundi was built by Cetshwayo upon his becoming the chief of the Zulus and is still regarded as the Zulu capital of Zululand and a new administrative centre is being constructed. King Mpande's grave is nearby.
